Many Asian and African countries are canine rabies-endemic.

Travelers may be advised to have a rabies shot before leaving home.

This shot is called a pre-exposure prophylaxis. It provides immunity allowing a person more time to seek treatment after a rabies exposure.

This is important, because treatment is not immediately available in parts of the world.

Before You Travel:

If you are using a travel agent, they may mention you need vaccinations.

It's a good idea to find out what vaccines you need at the time you book your travel. Some shots need to be given well in advance.
