Meet some of the health professionals, scientists, veterinarians & animal specialists and volunteers working to put an end to rabies:

doctor

Dr. Steve Scholand is an infectious diseases doctor (ID doctor), and the Director of RFW. He works with people who have infections, usually as part of a team with other doctors in the hospital. He also attends clinics - offices outside the hospital - to see outpatients who are well enough to stay at home. A lot of the outpatients are living with AIDS - often they will be fine if they keep taking their medication.

nurse

Hospice nurses have a special role in caring for people with rabies. Through the Starfish Palliative Care Program at San Lazaro Hospital, Manila, nurses talk with the patient and listen to their family, and give medicine to help the patient rest without pain. At San Lazaro, the small things nurses do each day make a big difference in helping rabies patients and their families to be at peace.

microbiologist

A microbiologist works a laboratory or ‘lab’ and investigates what type of 'bug' might be making a person ill. For example, when a nurse or doctor takes a thoat swab the microbiologist will grow a culture on a ‘plate’ or Petri dish, then look at the bacterium (pl: bacteria) under a microscope and find out what is causing that patient’s symptoms. They will determine which types of antibiotics can be used to kill this germ. Viruses and parasites can be harder to figure out - a team of microbiologists and scientists may work together to find out what sort of treatment will be most effective.

volunteer

Maricar is a graphic designer in Manila who donated her time to design our logo, our first brochure, and our first rabies Fun Run t-shirt!

Kim (UK) also designs for RFW and is currently developing more resources for this site.

Volunteers are the backbone of many charities who work in the rabies field. Whether you're able to help by giving time or finance, no matter how small, we'd love to hear from you. mail@rabiesfree.org
