What is rabies?

Rabies is a virus which affects the central nervous system.

Can humans get rabies?

Yes. World-wide, 55,000 people die every year from rabies, making it the 10th cause of death from infectious disease.

How is rabies spread?

Rabies is carried in saliva and infects the brain and drives the animal mad, making it roam and want to bite other animals and people. It is passed on through scratches, licks, and bites, or through saliva getting in a person's eyes, nose or mouth.

Why do victims foam at the mouth?

Rabies patients and animals become scared of water because of painful spasms in their throat. Saliva gathers at the mouth like froth because it hurts too much to swallow.

Can rabies be cured?

Can all animals get rabies?

How do I know if an animal has rabies?

Because we often can't tell just by looking, it's important not to touch wild animals, or go near cats or dogs you don't know.

Never go near, or touch a sick or injured animal, even if it looks tame. Tell an adult straight away and ask them to call an animal control officer or health authority.

What should I do if I get bitten?

Wash the bite straight away with soap and water and tell an adult immediately. You will need to go to your doctor or hospital emergency room as soon as possible.

What should I do if my pet gets in a fight?

Do not touch any wounds on your pet. Tell an adult right away. Your pet will need to see a vet, even if it has been vaccinated.
